Mustard Skittles taste like regret. Here's why and where to get a bag

Jun 07, 2023

To celebrate National Mustard Day on Aug. 5, French's and Skittles teamed up to create a candy combination that absolutely no one needed or wanted: mustard flavored Skittles.

French's previously celebrated National Mustard Day with other strange dessert combinations like mustard ice cream and mustard donuts. But Skittles might just be the most ambitious crossover yet.

“With the yellow holiday landing on August 5th, we knew we had to outdo ourselves. We are thrilled to collaborate with SKITTLES to deliver our beloved Classic Yellow® Mustard tang in a new and fun way to French's and SKITTLES fans alike,” Valda Coryat, North America Vice President of Marketing for McCormick & Company, wrote in a statement.

Advertised as "seriously tangy candy," French's and Skittles aimed to create a candy that was unlike anything that's ever been seen before. And in that they have succeeded. The combination will haunt my dreams.

I consider myself a Skittles fan. While they might not be my number one favorite, they've accompanied me to many a movie theater and countless long car rides. So, when I heard about mustard flavored Skittles, I was skeptical, but I also didn't think it could possibly be all that bad.

I reached out to French's to request a sample and in the days leading up to their arrival, I began to have second thoughts. I mentally prepared myself to taste candy that resembled Skittles in appearance only, with a taste akin to drinking French's yellow mustard straight out of the bottle.

But that is not what they taste like.

I cannot stress this enough. Whatever flavor combination you've created in your head since hearing the words mustard and Skittles paired together, get rid of it. Nothing can prepare you for this atrocity.

On first taste, I did recognize a distinct Skittles flavor in the hard coating of the candy. But after biting into it, I experienced waves of evolving emotion — surprise and astonishment that quickly morphed into horror. The longest lasting feeling was one of overwhelming regret.

The flavor is definitely not French's. There was a mustard flavor present, but it was closer to the sharpness of Dijon with a hint of gingery aftertaste. It wasn't tangy. In fact, I think if it had been, I might have enjoyed it more. (Or endured it more bravely?)

What it really tasted like was less overwhelming than it was upsetting.

Upon eating a second Skittle, it tasted as though a version of the candy was accidentally dropped into Dijon mustard that had started to turn, with a hint of sun melted plastic.

I enjoy trying strange food combinations. Take Peepsi, for instance. But there was nothing enjoyable about this product, which was somehow worse than the sum of its parts.

If you're still curious enough to subject yourself to mustard Skittles, I suppose nothing else I can say will stop you.

You won't find these Skittles in stores, but you can order a bag on French's website while supplies last — just fill out the form with your address and a fun size bag will be shipped to you for free.
