Whiskey Gets a Modern Makeover with Wacky Flavours

Oct 29, 2023

Whiskey is breaking tradition by offering a variety of modern and unusual flavours. One of the latest additions is Aldi’s peanut butter whiskey liqueur, which rivals the popular and more expensive Sheep Dog brand. Along with peanut butter, other unexpected flavours include banana. These syrupy treats are perfect for cocktails or enjoyed as after-dinner shots on the rocks.

Helena Nicklin from thethreedrinkers.com tested seven unique and distinctive whiskey flavours. Sheep Dog’s peanut butter whiskey had a pleasant aroma and tasted like a tipsy Snickers bar, with a nutty vibe and a caramel silkiness. Aldi’s peanut butter whiskey, a Sheep Dog dupe at half the price, was lighter in body and simpler in flavour but easy to drink. It complemented mixology and was recommended for a peanut butter and jelly cocktail with a pinch of sea salt and a dash of cherry liqueur.

Jameson Irish whiskey with natural orange flavour offered a smooth, triple-distilled blend with a zesty natural orange flavour. It had a bitter orange peel finish and was suggested to be enjoyed over ice or in a chocolate-orange Old Fashioned cocktail.

Red Stag black cherry liqueur by Jim Beam disappointed with a subtle cherry taste reminiscent of cough syrup. It was fairly sweet and unbalanced, recommended to be mixed in a fruity cocktail or with ginger beer.

Howler Head Monkey Spirit whiskey with banana liqueur impressed with its higher alcohol content and premium packaging. It had the right amount of banana flavour and a hint of caramel, well-balanced and not overly sweet.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey with apple liqueur had a subtle whiskey taste and was compared to sour apple candy and apple juice. It was recommended to be enjoyed with a mixer such as ginger ale or ginger beer, and as the base for apple whiskey sours.

Lucky Sod toffee, caramel, and vanilla liqueur with whiskey offered little whiskey taste but was still irresistibly delicious. It had flavors of salted caramel toffee, nuts, baking spice, and vanilla, making it a perfect indulgent dessert when poured over ice cream.

Overall, whiskey is undergoing a transformation with these unique and varied flavours, offering a modern twist on a classic spirit.
